General Motors has joined hands with Bangalore-based Reva Electric Car Company to manufacture electric vehicles for the Indian market.
By making India a global hub for affordable environment-friendly vehicles, GM also hopes to emerge as a major manufacturer of electric vehicles.
"We are pleased to join hands with Reva to bring affordable small car platform-based electric vehicles to the market in line with government objectives to reduce fossil fuel dependence," Karl Slym, president and managing director of General Motors India, said today.
He said GM would match its ability to develop platforms with Reva's capability to develop electric drive-trains and control system to manufacture new electric vehicles in India, adding the company will also work with the government to incentivise the use of environment-friendly vehicles.
GM is interested in Reva's technology, as it could bring significant cost savings in pricing its electric cars.
This is because Reva's dvanced power management and drivetrain technology could be used in GM's 2010 version of the petrol Chevy Spark mini car to introduce it it in an EV variant. (See: GM to collaborate with Indian electric car maker Reva)
